I have always had great respect and admiration for my closest uncle, but especially as a young child. In 3rd grade I had to write an assignment on what we wanted to be when we grew up. I chose to write about becoming a lawyer because my uncle was one. As I grew up I started to realize that being a lawyer would take an enormous amount of time during the week and the weekends.
The more and more I started to realize who I was, the more I realized that I did not want a job that would consume my entire life. I wanted to be able to have time on the weekends for my friends and my hobbies. I wanted those closest to me to attend my sporting events growing up, from playing basketball to running track. I also realized that out of all the games that I had played in throughout high school and middle school, my uncle had only been able to make a few due to his overwhelming work schedule. I did not want to be like this when I finally decide to settle down and have a family in the future. I want to be able to attend events and games that my future kids will be having. Family is very important to me and I wanted to be able to go to my children’s activities. I knew that in order for me to do that I might have to sacrifice making more money. This was a career choice that I needed to make for myself and for my future family.
It is important for you to set your priorities from the beginning. If you know that you want to make yourself available for your family, friends, and hobbies on the weekends, and that out weighs making more money, then don’t waste your time in a career that is going to take up a lot of your time to get into and then not be able to accommodate to your future goals. If you know that making the big bucks is a priority to everything else then route your career towards that path. No matter what, remember that it is all about your preference. Do not be ashamed to turn down the big corporate position if you know that is not what your life is headed towards.
